In October last year, friend of Red Planet Johnny Lennie earned his first BBC Radio 4commission for a series of five monologues about the bit players in musical history who were responsible for the deaths of the great composers - Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Bach & Handel, Webern and Mozart. The series evolved from a one-act play Johnny wrote for the Joinedupwriters writing and theatre group. Radio Times described the series as "an original idea that's been treated with intelligence".
The five plays have now been adapted for the stage, and are being performed at The Red Hedgehog in Highgate London from 15 March to 1 April 2007.
I was lucky enough to see the original Joinedupwriters performance of "Webern and Me" and revelled in the wonderful writing and exceptional performance by Carl Prekopp. I honestly cannot recommend this highly enough. Checkout the flyer, then beg, borrow or steal a ticket for what should be a fascinating an enlightening night of theatre.
ps Red Planet recorded a full-length audio production of "Webern and Me" which we like to think helped get the Radio Four commission, but we don't doubt that Johnny's writing probably helped a bit too..! You can listen to that original recording below.
